For more than a dozen years, Eli has studied the art of war from some of the most skilled fighters on three planets. There's no question, he has what it takes to be a professional soldier.
There's just one problem. His father is General Grant Justice, the most famous man in the galaxy and leader of a new governmental alliance that unites four alien races.
When it comes time to enlist, the younger Justice has to make a choice. Rely on his last name and claim an automatic commission as an officer? Or enter basic training as a lowly private and earn his way to the top?
For Eli, the decision is an easy one. He changes his name and enlists as an anonymous recruit.
Unfortunately, not all of life's choices have such clear-cut answers. An alien-led rebellion is brewing in the ranks of the army he has just joined, and Eli is forced to choose sides. His actions will determine the fate of his father, the alliance, and the entire human race.

Remember the hedonistic thugs of "Rollerball" Rollerball: Special Edition [Blu-ray]? "In the future there will be no war. There will only be Rollerball." Steven L. Hawk's vision is once-removed from that, with an Earth where peace is so pervasive that expressions like "when the shout hits the air" and "flocking monsters" have replaced their more violent, vulgar predecessors. Yet even a peaceful society needs warriors—especially when their space may be invaded by warring alien cultures. That's where Eli Jayson comes in. He's joined the ranks of a military where most of the privates are orphans from Earth, raised in an institutional environment that promotes a level of forceful competition unwelcome in general society. Not Eli, though. He's incognito; his real surname is "Justice" and his father is the renowned commander of the "Shiale" alliance of four races, human, Telgoran, Waa, and Minith. Eli grew up on Waa, was trained in weapons-handling by truly-fierce Minith warriors. He learned a bit of all three non-human languages. And he's determined to make it on his own, without trading on the family name.
All he needs to do is not stand out.
That, he discovers, is an impossible task when you can almost defeat one of the Hulk-sized green Minith with their own oversized staves, or understand what they are muttering when the Minith sergeants conspire to wash out large numbers of the human soldiers and send them back to Earth.
Then he manages to enlist the help of one of the stand-offish Telgoran natives of the world where they are training, and use his assistance to win the unwinnable test assignment. His "Kobayashi Maru" victory lands him in a court martial.
If you have already encountered the worlds of the Shiale alliance, the name of Justice is familiar. I, however, was unacquainted with "The Peace Warrior" trilogy, but decided to buy this novel when I saw the title on Kindle Scout. (I had missed the campaign to nominate it.) Now that I've nearly finished the tale of Grant Justice's son, I've purchased the omnibus volume of the trilogy to read. Better late than never!
Either way, I strongly recommend "Son of Justice" for mil-SF fans and coming-of-age-tale readers alike. Eli Justice is a winner.

Son of Justice The Justice Trilogy Series Book 1 eBook Steven L Hawk Reviews
I don't review a lot of books, maybe one in ten that I read, but for this one I'm making an exception. This book had me from chapter one and kept me reading until the end. It was one of those books I didn't want to end. I don't like series that go on forever but I'd love to see the author add to this book with one or two more. After reading I realized their are three other previous books about Dad, so when I'm done writing this I'm off to the next exciting adventure.
Train a new group of soldiers with a new type of weapons gear, give them an inventive, adaptable, & well trained leader, & turn them loose on a nasty situation. This is a fun story, with some traitorous twists that provide good reading. Characters are not that well developed, but there are other books in the series. Looking forward to them.
Son of Justice was a refreshing read. The characters came to life as the personalities of both the good guys and the bad guys, wove seamlessly through the plot. We watched Eli, the main character, reach inside himself to follow his instincts, yet always remind himself to choose carefully. The respect he has for his father shows through his decisions as he maneuvers through the military. His skills learned since childhood, are exposed a little at a time and his thoughts play such a huge role as he challenges himself to be a better soldier and person. I enjoyed this story so much because it flowed so evenly, drawing you into the details, yet keeping the storyline moving. It was not bogged down with too much detail of the different planetary worlds. But was "salted" with just the right amount of information to help you feel like you are actually there beside the characters. A good highlight that I MUST bring out is that contrary to other military type stories, it is not laced with profanity. This new age has brought new words to replace the course language we see in so much of today's writings. Mind you, I understand there has to be reality...but in this story, this is the new reality several centuries into the future. I could easily recommend this book for any age that may enjoy sci-fi futuristic combat! If there were any words that slipped by me, I apologize, but truly, I could see middle school students to mature adults enjoying this story.
This was the best book I've read so far this year. The plot line was so intricate and the characters so well developed, I'm just happy I stumbled across this book. It was an incredible surprise, and I don't usually read this genre. Bravo to the author. There are a few grammatical editing errors toward the end, but I know even the best editors miss things sometimes and it certainly did not detract from the book.
Son of Justice takes up where the Peace Warrior trilogy ends, and the Shial Alliance is still young. Cracks have started to appear in the relationships between races, but the Alliance still holds strong, for now.
As the story opens, we enter the world of Eli Justice, son of the human who lead the way to freeing the races of the Shiale Alliance from the tyranny of the Minith forces. Training to become a soldier on a world with a very limited habitable zone is certainly not easy, especially when your training is in the hands of the very species that recently lost the war.
The story takes leads us through from training to deployment, and beyond, taking some very surprising turns along the way.
The various races stand out against each other, and the tensions between them is in every thread of the story. But more than that, the author brings us characters who shine out beyond the majority of their individual races, each with real goals and feelings.
I'm just sorry I didn't pick up the Peace Warrior series first... but that's being rectified immediately...
